I joined VS-37 at NAS Los Alamitos...,deployed with the Rooster Tails in Hornet for two cruises in '59 thru '62, then to the RAG for a 2 yr tour. After that, to Bennington (Cat Officer) and Air Pac Staff, back to the Rooster Tails for a third cruise in '69 (Maintenance Officer). There's more....but it will cost you a Beer (or Vodka) to hear it. I must have forgotten.... Did VS 35 have a sort of RED BOOMERANG on the Tail? I will be looking forward to seeing the rest of you....in PNS. Stay Healthy! Kass...

While awaiting my squadron returning from a deployment, a VP type started playing with my mind, by pointing out that "jet jocks" only flew about 2.5 to 4.0 hours a month. This was a shock to a nugget who had set his heart on getting to the "magic" 800 hours flight time mark. I went to th BOQ and drafted a very sincere letter to Sec Nav, and explained that I had come to the Navy to fly...and that I respectfully requested not only a transfer to a carrier based Anti-Submarine Squadron, but to be accepted for Augmentation into the Regular Navy. I was contacted and asked if I had any particular VS squadron in mind. I told him Air Anti-Submarine Squadron Thirty Seven at Los Alamitos...Honestly! Within a week or so, I received a change of designation into the regular navy, with orders to report to C.O., VS-37 based at Los Alamitos. I have to tell you, I was VERY happy. Especially after reporting aboard and meeting the squadron. They had just returned from a most successful cruise in Hornet, and (I think) happy to have me aboard. In all honesty, now, I wonder if it was just because I could share the Watch Bill. It wasn't long before I was told that I was the "Bull JG", and as such would be assigned an an aircraft. I say it wasn't long....but it was just long enough. My crew and I qualified for an ALPHA Crew designation, and our work-up with the squadron began to take on a new importance. I will never forget the first Administrative / Material Inspection with VS-37. I learned an awful lot about the individuals I would be cruising with. There was absolutely nothing more important than the preservation of those wonderful ROOSTER TAILS ! If I remember correctly, the CO at the time willingly accepted a "HIT" rather than let one feather of a Rooster Tail get plucked. Such pride I have never experienced afterward, except for my Catapult and Arresting Gear crew when I served as Catapult Officer in Bennington, CVS 20. I have so many beautiful memories of my days with VS-37. Memories that have served me well throughout my Naval Service. There will never be memories that could replace them. My wife Estelle (ES) enjoyed many of the same experiences with me during our VS-37 tour, and during the tours that followed. We had one daughter (Kathy) before reporting aboard....and another daughter (Nancy) while in the squadron. Both are married, and have provided us with 11 grandchildren. Kathy and her family with nine grandchildren live in close proximity, while Nancy and her family live in Pennsylvania. Es is President of Marian Catholic High School, and is quite busy doing all that is necessary to build a larger, new High School East of Chula Vista, Ca. She loves the responsibilities involved with the planning, selection of property, securing funding, and taking care of "her constituents". She is very busy, and apparently thrives on a full schedule. Incidentally, she insists that I not 'retire', stating that she knows several older men whose minds have turned to mush. I'm no fool, so I work part time staying off the streets, and doing what I want / enjoy. Es and I have been fortunate in another regard as well. We do have a son, Roy, who came into our lives in a wonderful way. Although he is 45 years (young) now, he has picked Es and I to be his mom and dad. We first met Roy when he was about 16 years old, and both Es and I have loved him from the first day. Roy is the brother our 2 daughters never had, and to Es and I, the son we never had. He as given us 2 additional grandbabies, both boys...and well as a great new daughter, Jessica. Roy is absent quite a bit lately, flying for Delta, and in between, serving with the Marines. When on active duty in the Corps, he flew F18 Hornets. He retired as a Bird Colonel I have been to two Reunions held in Pensacola with my son's squadron, The Gray Ghosts. Also two to Cherry Point where we enjoy a "pig picker" as the highlight of the Reunion. and two in Washington, DC. We tried Norfolk a couple years back, but nothing special. The last VS-37 reunion, the Only VS-37 Reunion I attended, was at the Skyroom at the North Is. O'Club.....It was great..... I don't know what I did wrong, because I (we) were never asked to another. Maybe it is because I am considered somewhat of a Quiet Type. Can't talk, never could. As for Reunion 2005, I want to come, because I sense that THIS will be a Reunion to end all Reunions. It is obvious that it is a well planned Reunion, and one that will be of the type that causes a "darn it! If I had only gone!" type Reunion. You will understand that I would prefer coming with Es. So, I will probably wait until farther downstream to declare myself.

I served with VS-37 from June of 1977 to July of 1980. We were the first West Coast fleet Squadron to upgrade to the S3-A Viking aircraft from the S-2 Tracker. Deployed on West pack aboard the USS Constellation CVA-64. Our CO was Commander JP Cartwrite, a finer squadron and CO there never was. My hats off to all members of airantisubron 37 past and present. Any members of my old squad who see this feel free to contact me. My respect to the families of the aircrew we lost in the PI. AW-3 Mentink knew it was coming and asked me to disable the aircraft that night. I wish I had.

I joined VS 37 in June of 1955 at North Island as an AE2. We were on Carrier Quals onboard the USS Philippine Sea ( CVS-47) in October when we were called back into port for emergency deployment to Pearl Harbor. We returned to San Diego in mid December to prepare for our scheduled deployment. We spent several month operating out of Pearl and then steamed to Japan. During our Far East deployment, we visited several ports in Japan; Tokyo, Yokosuka, Sasebo, Kobe/Osaka and Hiroshima. We also operated out of MCAS Atsugi for a period of time. Our travels then took us to Okinawa and Hong Kong. We were suppose to go to Sidney but plans were changed. We returned to the States via the northern route in August, 1956. The Squadron was then transferred to Los Alamitos.I was transferred to NAS Pensacola in November to work with the Blue Angels.

Jack you are a prince among men. Our lives have become richer since meeting you at the reunions. It is great to know that one is not alone...and greater still because you and your shipmates knew my beloved husband. I miss him every day of my life but all of his shipmates made me aware of another facet of Bob Sennett...one his family was not privy to...as his life at home was so totally different. All of you made me appreciate a new Bob which I never knew existed. Thank you for honoring him and all of the other crewmen. You and yours will always be in my prayers. Thanks again, Jack.

E3 Mess Cook, Line, and Metalsmith Shop in VS-35. Joined the squadron and the Hornet when the ship pulled into Subic Bay in late 1965 or early 1966. Went straight to the galley for 3 months with George Fields. We hauled a lot of shit cans. Then went to the line with Goose, Kluver, and Este for a while. Finally started learning S2 hydraulics and corrosion control but I had a girlfriend back home and decided not to ship over. If I could do it again I would have stayed in. Can't believe it was almost 40 years ago. David S.

I am glad to see a site that is dedicated to the finest ASW squadron in the Navy. I remember when I graduated from VS-41 and was asked where I wish to be assigned, and replied without hesitation VS-37. At the time all I knew about that squadron was that they were the best, and I wanted to be a part of it. Many many happy memories were as a Sawbuck and I can't tell you how much influence they were in making me who I am now. I was an AW from 1982-83 ,made 1 wespac cruise aboard U.S.S. Enterprise (CVW 11) with vs-37, and my nickname was 'spunky'. Good luck to all of you.

Served in HS-2 '64 - '66 after flying fixed wing from '55 -'64. Have also logged many S-2 and C-1 hours while Ass't Air Ops aboard the "Benny Boat" and at PG School. All fun aircraft to fly! Now confining my aerodynamic skills to sailing Long Island Sound in summertime. Always happy to hear from former shipmates and reminisce as we all enter "the Golden Years". I served with VS-37 as a pilot from 1968 to 1970. I was a Lieutenant when I left active duty. After that I flew with a Reserve Squadron at NAF Detroit at Selfridge ANG Base until the S2's were retired and replaced with P-3's. I did not continue flying but stayed with the reserves until retiring as a LCDR in 1986. In civilian life I was an Engineer with General Motors until my retirement in 1999. I still enjoy working with cars and have built several Austin Healey replicas.

Great “Stoof” site! Keep the carrier-based ASW Flag Flying. STOOFZ4EVER!!! I served in VS-37 as an AT1(AC) when CDR’s L. D. Bowen & J. L. Girard were “Sawbuck Skippers.” I worked in the VS-37 AT Shop as an ASW/Radar Avionics “Stoof Fixer,” and flew as a designated Navy Aircrewman qualified to sit both the JULIE/JEZEBEL and RADAR positions. Got selected for NESEP and departed the Rooster Tail Squadron to attend Vanderbilt University. Went on to get promoted to ATC(AC), earn a Vanderbilt BEEE, Regular Commission and Pensacola wings of gold. Had a full Navy career via Vietnam “Market Time” patrols, M.Sc. INFO-COMM NPS PG-School, Proven INFO-COMM/ELEX Subspecialist “Purple-Suiter” at DCA-DISA, “Starship” Enterprise WEPS before getting piped-over-the-side of “Mighty Mo” BB63 into Fair Winds and Following Seas in the 1970s. FYI: I launched a new e-magazine at 0001ZULU(UT)20050101. Click http://www.home.earthlink.net/~poliakonia/ Shipmates, if y'all happen to be cruising down the Information Highway and see an off-ramp marked "P-A1A Info-Byway," TAKE IT and come set a spell at my Green Picnic Table to swap some "Stoof" sea stories with the Catgic.

Joined HS-2 in the Spring of 66 after they returned from Westpac cruise. Made two Westpac cruises and left in Summer of 69. Flew with Chuck Turner during first cruise and lost our two crewmen Souci and Schmitou when they went flying on a CSAR mission and were lost at sea. Still remember my first flight in the squadron with Mel Howell, we were flying east of San Diego in an uninhabited area and the next thing I knew Mel took the helo right down to the deck, I asked if he wanted me to lower the landing gear because it seemed like he was going to land. He just laughed and proceeded to fly down this dirt track. He said he liked to picture the forward twirly about 6 inches off the deck. We scared the s==t out of some biker coming down the road. Retired from the Navy in 84 and quit working in 2002. Great to see the pictures of the old days and the new pictures of the old guys.

Just found out about your website. Very impressive. Was a pilot in HS-2 from 67-69. Would like to hear from any HS-2 pilots and aircrew. The USS Hornet has just acquired an H-3. Would like to see the HS-2 emblem on it (they're thinking HS-4 because of the Apollo connection) HS-2 and CVSG-57 were the Hornets and HS-2 was last squadron in the Hornet history to fly into combat. Think HS-2 should be represented

Terry and all: I am an old Army Aviator vet who has a wholesome appreciation for the Navy although we beat you my first year at the Point. Your site is absolutely beautiful, and my hat is off to all the daring Navy pilots, crews, and staff that have contributed to the maintenance of our liberties and freedoms as a nation. God bless you one and all.

I just found this website looking for old photo's and stories. Everything on here looks great, but I wish there was more. I'll look through some of my old photo's and see if I can contribute any. I would like to hear from other squadron members. VS-41 1968, VS-37 1969 - 1973 AX-4

I served in the VS-37 electric shop and became a qualified aircrewman during the April 1963 - July 1966 time frame. I reenlisted as an AE2 (AC) and was off to NAS Jax for 'B' School. I retired in August 1992, from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) where I had the privilege of serving as the Command Master Chief. I can not describe how tickled I was to see the many names listed on your site I recognize. Thank you for your time and dedication to bringing back those wonderful memories.

I was and AX2 (AC) in HS-2. I joined HS-2 in June of 1965 and made the 65/66 and most of the 67 West Pac's. I left the 67 West Pac early because of an unscheduled hard landing in Manila Bay. I am looking forward to the next reunion.

I was a yeoman 3rd class assigned to CVSG (CAG) 57 from '63 to 65. I was transferred there from HS-2 and transferred from CAG 57 to Submarine Warfare Research and Development, the Pentagon until discharge in 1967. Yeoman 1st class Frank Stewart was the leading PO at that time. CAG was Commander Wilson and Exec was LCDR "Bo" White. Sorry I missed the reunion, just found out about it!

Great web site. I was an AX-2 in HS-2 on The '67 cruise on Hornet and AX/AW-1 in HS-2 on the '68/'69 cruise on Hornet. Thanks to this web site, I was found out about the reunion in San Diego last year and got together with some old shipmates that I hadn't seen in almost 40 yrs. Don't know why they got so old. Thanks again, good job.

Thank you for the website.  I was an AO in VS-37 from 1991 to 1995.  My Chief at the time was Senior Chief Rutledge.  I worked with Gary Vorous, Nick Starks, Joey Costanza, Ted Braun, Patrick Leslie, and Francis Miller on the Kitty Hawk.  I sure would like to see where they are now.  Do you have any intention to post email addresses in the future?  Mine is danielbays@msn.com.  Sure would like to know what those fellas are up to now.

Again, thanks for the website.

Just found the CAG 57 guest book this evening. I was amazed to see some of the names in it, several of the gents I flew with. My tenure in VS-37 began in Oct 1967, and I was transferred to shore duty, (FAETUPAC) in December 1968.

I retired in 1977 from VS-29 after returning from the first S3A deployment to the Pacific in USS Enterprise.

When I joined VS-37, I had just come from a two and one-half year tour on Adak Island, in the Aleutian Island chain. I reported as an AX1, and served as the Aircrew Training PO during my tour there.  While there, the AW rate came to being, and I became an AW1. I deployed with the squadron in October of 68, and was the number 4 operator of Crew 2.  The pilot was CDR J. Kennedy, copilot was LT Arthur Wittig, I served as the Jezebel Operator, and AO2 Tom Tucker was the RADAR/MAD/ESM operator.
Our CO was CDR Manring at the time.

My career was for the most part spent at NAS North Island, serving in the following VS squadrons.
VS-38 (Jul 57-Mar 60) VS-33 (Apr 60- May 62), VS37 (Oct 67-Dec 68) and VS-29 (Jan 72-Jul 77)
Also two tours at FAETUPAC/FASO, training S2E pilots on the AN.ASN-30 Tactical/Navigational System

Please add me to the roster.

I would like to write a more formal article of my time in VS-37, but that will take some research.

 Dennis Rice

I'd like to add my name to the HS-2 roster. I was in HS-2 from 1963 through part of 1967.  At the time I was in HS-2 I was an AE-2. I earned my aircrew wings in the SH3A and flew as first crew. I changed to the AW rate and I am a plankholder. I retired in 1977. Thanks for your great web site. Another site that you might be interested in is the Together We Serve website at http://navy.togetherweserved.com/usn

Hello, very interesting web site on VS-37. I was a member during the transition from the Stoof to the S3a. My 15 minutes of fame was being the brake rider on the last S2 as it was towed past the podium during the decommissioning ceremony. LOL... I was the first to qualify as a Plane Captain on the S3a while attached to VS-37.
